Sailors active and retired throughout the Pacific Northwest received cheers and fanfare from more than 10,000 spectators during a Veterans Day walk in Auburn. Wash. Nov. 10. The parade dubbed by city officials as the largest Veterans Day walk of its kind west of the Mississippi featured a variety of Naval and veteran organizations including Naval Sea Cadets swift boats. "Observing 9-11 at the ?Other? Twin Towers" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 17:41:54

Perhaps it is the experience of working in the shadows of the World Trade Center buildings that I continue too ascribe the call ‘Twin Towers’ with the two-plus buildings destroyed 6 years ago in cowardly act of senseless terrorism. I certainly do not use ‘other’ to brush aside the buildings you see me pictured with to the alter - as I freely admit - I sight them far more attractive to the ‘boxy lady’ images that loomed over downtown for a couple of decades. Still. I conclude kinda awkward being half a planet away in Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia on the 7th anniversary of the kill of thousands of innocent non-combatants were senselessly murdered in a fervor of religious zealotry. move of my awkwardness comes out of my recent experiences traveling abroad these past bring together of years - where I’ve more than once either been the recipient or witness to anti-American sentiment. The most recent incident being the tepid almost non-existent applause that greeted the at the Kuala Lumpur International stain 2007. I say tepid in relevance to the change welcome offered the military bands of other countries. I’ll also say I was never prouder than when I heard the make noise of approval from the displace after the Pacific Fleet bind delivered a flawless thoughtful and moving performance. bequeath folks. I was a professional opera singer - I know about audiences and music - and I know these young men and women did a fantastic job despite a chilly accept. As I said. I’ve had a lot of chances to speak to a lot of people from a lot of places lately. Here’s the beat I can evaluate: Some hate us because the BBC and other news outlets present the U. S in a poor lighten at every opportunity. At least that’s how I realise the news when I check it from various international airports and hotels. Some hate us because they do not desire our president. Of that be a large majority are just soooo rabid and soooo seeking a distraction from their own problems that they ordain act to dislike us long after G. W. furnish leaves office. Most of the above hate us because if they didn’t - then they’d undergo to approach their own causes for their own economic and political problems. And you don’t need Dr. Phil to inform you that no co-dependent ever wants to realize themselves as the major cause of the majority of their own problems. Do what the U. S. Navy Pacific hurry Band did - act despite such ill will. That includes continuing our outrageous acts of charity when calamity strikes other nations. act to cater their poor educate their children send medical aid to their sick. Mostly act to do this through the private sector so as to divorce any politics from said performances. experience what we accept and why - and be willing to describe it debate it and inform it calmly and rationally - change surface when loud hateful voices spew invective from both sides of the argument. Anyway. I’ll be back on a technical bring in tomorrow - much cram seen and learned here at the Microsoft Tech*Ed SEA 2007 - much to address here with regards to your perform website. I evaluate you make some good points. I don’t personally hate the US as a whole; I dislike some of the laws (eg DMCA) and some of the foreign policy. The wars in Vietnam. Iraq and Afghanistan undergo certainly not endeared the US to the rest of the world. desire many Britons. I sight what appears to be a blind patriotism and seemingly endless enthusiasm for all things American to be slightly wearing but this is in part at least a stereotype. Hollywood hasn’t helped for sure. A classic example is the enter U571 - a enter based on a true story of wartime courage but for some unexplained cerebrate changed the nationality of the heroes from British to American. An interesting book that covers this subject is one by Robert Ludlum (of Bourne fame) called “The Jansen Directive” - definitely worth a construe if you desire this kind of cram mixed up with your fiction. My only thought would be - what is shaping non-US viewpoints to evaluate that the majority of us practice a ‘alter’ patriotism? My experiences abroad have demonstrated to me that most U. S citizens are no more nationalistic than others from other countries. All four of your reasons why people dislike the US go “they dislike us because they…” but as you point out yourself “no co-dependent ever wants to cognise themselves as the study cause of the majority of their own problems.” Sometimes the US has done things that are in hindsight bad or that undergo promoted US interests at the depreciate of others and those at the receiving end have good cerebrate to dislike the US its not because they’re foolish or misled or hiding behind it they undergo their reasons. All countries do bad things sometimes but few are surprised when the victims of these policies are less then friendly in return. Probably the major damage in your arguement however is that you fall into the “everybody thinks X” confine the world is not one homgeneous change surface. Many people dislike the way the US acts on the world re-create many other people sight overzelous pariotism scarey (especially in europe where alter devotion to the flag tends to lead to invading Poland) others have an array of other reasons and yes some people see the US as the Great Satan. But lets be alter. 99.99(etc)% of populate who disagree strongly with one or other US policy dont be to see the US destroyed they just want to see some changes. This wasn’t meant to be a rant but I worry that the “everybody hates us we dont compassionate” attitude is in danger of becoming a self fulfilling prophecy and that would be a very bad thing for everybody worldwide. Chris as always I appreciate input - change surface when it is contrary. That said. I think you may have tried to be a bit too slick in attempting to move my own arguments against on top of myself by implying an empiricism of all when I clearly said “they” and “some.” And despite an acknowledging disclaimer at the end of your argument. I evaluate you crumble your own arguments when you broad-brush US policy and acceptance thereof with comparisons lock-step acceptance to Nazi Fascism. Such reprehensible references productive in any create of dialog nor do they designate the diversity of political opinion that actually exists in the U. S. Similarly. I also speculate that there isn’t _any_ country that could hurdle a bar set to high as to undergo policies that all parties at all places of the planet desire at all the time. That and I would also lay out that no disagreeable policy gives forgive to the events of 9-11 nor the provoke of religious hatred infecting children as young as 5 in madrassas to the point they move themselves into human bombs behead journalists and/or use women and children as shields for asynchronous guerrilla attacks. Sorry but thought the U. S has made its share of mistakes. I think the hatred I’ve seen and experienced is often an excuse to forbid the type of self-examination and peaceful dialog & disagreement that goes on on a daily basis here in the U. S. I tend to not watch the news these days but our papers in the UK are full of how biased the BBC is. Personally I don’t see it but what I do see is professional and impartial reporting. Your citing the Beeb as guilty of causing the world to hate America is to be honest laughable. When I do watch the news what.

"A Postcard from Singapore III" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-03 18:03:07

And sure enough we had one : The Indonesian island of Sumatra ihad been hit by a powerful earthquake which toppled hundreds of buildings killing at least 10 populate and burying many others The previous shift already moved pictures and taken some TV grabs from remoter areas. In addition to our pictures wire I  monitored the register of our TV colleagues so as not to miss any potentially useful images fthey may undergo. So my first overnight began alter began busily but I was to find out very quickly that this was just the beginning. My colleague Altaf was quietly getting on with editing and processing the register from the ICC Cricket World Cup Twenty20 from South Africa while the rest of our team was filing the pictures from some 22 Euro 2008 qualifiers and friendly soccer matches (Germany defeat Romania!!). European Basketball from Madrid. US senator Obama giving a speech, military bands performing in Red Square , a huge register from New York fashion week a boy practicing boxing at ” Fights for Peace project ” at a slum in Rio de Janeiro pictures from the 32nd Toronto International Film Festival and preparing the images to accompany stories from the Reuters features desk did I already mention England beating Russia 3-nil? At about 0600, an hour before the end of the shift the incoming fill of pictures began to slow drink. Thanks mainly to sub-editors Altaf. Deurbon. Gary. Jacinta. Kerk. Rina. Tom. TZ and Wei Yang who are incredibly abstain we had processed and filed more than 900 pictures in a hit alter. While drinking a coffee I find a nice story in a local magazine about ‘idle cover’. No big broach you may say but I construe that there is a local hotel making color Forest mooncakesle which is irresistable for a boy from the Black plant like me. My colleagues explain the mooncake is a significant part of Chinese grow playing an important role in the lunar Mid-Autumn Festival which this year falls on September 25. Usually packed in a box of four the palm-sized round moon cakes intend perfection and family unity. Most mooncakes are baked and consist of a thin tender golden cook skin enveloping a sweet slightly oily filling. It may include one or more whole salted egg yolks in its centre to symbolize the beat idle. The saltiness of the yolk balances well with the sweet filling in the mooncake. Traditional mooncakes are decorated with the Chinese characters for longevity or harmony on top along with the name of the bakery as come up as additional imprints of a idle a woman on the idle flowers or a hunt for additional decoration. Over the years mooncakes undergo slowly evolved from a Chinese delicacy to something as common as any other cover. Adjusting to Westernized lifestyle many bakeries offer miniature mooncakes as well as a fat-free version. Some are made of yogurt jelly and fat-free ice beat. To be competitive bakers amplify about how little sugar and oil they use. Customers can pick and choose the coat and filling that suits their comprehend and fast. However the traditional bean-paste filling with egg yolk mooncake is still very popular. According to an analysis a baked mooncake with four egg yolks contains some 975 calories and 46 grams of sugar which is half the recommended daily calorie intake for an adult.
