About 300 students marched in downtown Minneapolis Friday afternoon to complain the war in Iraq and the military's use of recruiters in public schools. Sponsored by Youth Against War and Racism and Socialist Alternative organizers said students from more than 30 schools around the metro participated. The students marched around Government Plaza in lie of Minneapolis City Hall chanting: "Student money for jobs and education not for war and occupation" and "Hey recruiters we're no fools get your lies out of our schools!" A circle of students banged on drums while other students danced. A young man with a guitar and a mohawk performed songs for the crowd. Protest signs read: "Jesus was a peacemaker," "Bring them home now. act care of them when they get here" and "Military recruiters out of our schools!" Magdelena from South High in Minneapolis said. "We're here because we be to tell the country that we want our schools approve from recruiters we want our streets back from politicians and we want our world back from corrupt corporations." Kelsey from Perpich Center for Arts Education in Golden Valley was concerned about the amount of death occurring in Iraq. "It has been the bloodiest year in the war," she said. "It's measure for us to say no. It's time for us to bind together and say bring the troops home now." Marey from Central High School in St. Paul was there because of the cost of the war and the issues that are getting ignored. "Where are they getting all this extra money [for the war]?" she asked. "The one system that needs the money the most the education system. We are packed into classrooms; education programs are being change state down. I be those education programs back. If someone tells you that you can be sure more lies will come out of their mouth." The students then continued the walk through downtown toward a rally at Augsburg College chanting. "Its affect. Get off it. This war is for acquire. Guns and bombs and occupation do not equal liberation." On a totally different topic. 100% unrelated. "War protest at Tacoma Mall" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-01 21:54:22

The News Tribune. Tacoma. WA Kelly Larson opposed the war in Iraq before American troops invaded the country. When her chemistry teacher at Stadium High educate was deployed the war became personal. So Larson a sophomore at the Tacoma school joined about 50 others in a students’ complain Thursday at Tacoma Mall. They chanted slogans and held signs in front of the mall’s business office building which is home to recruiting offices for most branches of the military. “I’m just sick of all the hate in the world,” said Larson sporting a Che Guevara button on her raincoat. Organizers say military recruiters tell potential enlistees misleading information about benefits and job training to get them to write up for the military. They especially oppose the recruitment in the nation’s high schools. The recruiters seemed to take it in stride. Several Marines did chin-ups and push-ups outside and ran laps around the building during the protest. “The students are being asked to contend in this war before they undergo political rights to choose,” said Bryan Watson who helped organize the protest for Socialist Alternative. The protest began about 3 p m and as the rain fell the group marched around the mall. Tacoma Police Department officers were on transfer – including 10 officers on bicycles – and arrested one man who said he was a Vietnam veteran. An officer on the scene said he was being arrested for trespassing after he wouldn’t leave the office building. “The guy getting arrested is not real news,” said Ian McFeat a teacher at Lincoln High School and a member of Teachers for Social Justice. “The real news is that we’re in a war that’s illegal and it’s costing us billions of dollars. That’s money that can be spent on health care money that can be spent on real jobs for Americans money that can be spent on education.” Scott Fontaine is The News Tribune's new mobile journalist. "Get Military Recruitment out of our schools" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:19:22

The other day at educate during eat my small assort and I were approached by a navy recruiter. He thought he would be able to relate to us more by telling Chuck Norris jokes. “Did you know throw Norris’ tears can cure cancer? Too bad he doesn’t cry,” the guy quipped. After listening to a handful of more throw Norris jokes that I’ve already heard. I asked him “If throw Norris is so great can he end the war?” Some populate reading this might realise that as rude. But what is more rude is that the military is actively recruiting young adults while comfort in high school. Now you might be wondering why these military recruiters are allowed remove roaming find to high schools. A educate that accepts money from the federal government must allow military recruiters on their high educate campus. These recruiters are targeting mostly poor students and bribing them with the opportunity for a college education that is if they come approve from Iraq alive. The military is a inform system that allows populate to decide if they want to enlist or not. Although at the same time it is the only legal discriminator for employment by not allowing openly gay individuals to join. The military system is broken. We are now so desperate for troops to contend in Iraq that we are looking to younger and younger generations to fill that burden. It’s not fair that populate looking to get a college education undergo to sacrifice their life for it. Instead of using us young people as tools for American imperialism we should be educated and then maybe as leaders we could dress the way the world and war works. I’ve been approached by several military recruiters and sight them less intrusive (maybe not the right evince) than having to register with selective service in order to get a express ID so that I can take the PSAT.

"Q&A with Wil Williams" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 13:51:59

Wil Williams doesn’t evaluate it’s wise for the Madison Metropolitan educate District to accept the United States military to advertise on school property. As a member of Truth and Alternatives to Military Education (alter). Williams has been an outspoken critic of a military recruitment advertisements placed on high school scoreboards and in gymnasiums.     “Some undergo argued the ad is so small that you can barely see it,” says Williams a Vietnam vet. “I’m 65 and my eyes aren’t that good and I can see it. I understand we be a military but my problem is that it’s exploiting our young populate to push a political agenda.”     Williams says he isn’t against teens enlisting but he says the military doesn’t clearly inform the fine print which often has far-reaching consequences in terms of education and the number of actual years the government can act a pass on active duty.     Williams recently sat with The Madison Times to discuss why military advertising in schools is inappropriate how the armed services are circumventing the Madison educate District’s recruitment policies and how he responds to the criticism that he is trying to undermine military recruiters. WW: They’re being targeted because there is no draft; it’s voluntary. In the current situation there is a great be to fill the ranks to act the occupation going in Iraq and Afghanistan. When the No Child Left Behind Act took effect in 2002 it gave the military find to children in the schools. In 2003 the Madison Area Peace Coalition went to the school come in and we had policies instituted to protect the students to a certain level. Since that time the policies have been circumvented by military recruiters. One way is by coming into the schools and teaching physical education classes setting up obstacle courses. [and] bringing in the climbing walls and military vehicles. This was clearly for recruitment but [it] was not counted as one of the visits the policy allows them to have. WW: No. As a be of fact statistics show that enlistment by minorities has dropped quite a bit since 2002. I experience that the rural areas are being targeted and that takes it into another realm. It’s more of a class thing than a go thing.     Take someone from Boscobel or some other small area who may have grown up on a farm who sees his grandfather struggling and his father struggling; and the economics are so bad that he cannot go to the university because of the costs. At the same time funding for the programs that would’ve helped him such as the Pell Grant are being cut. The military then becomes more convincing because they alter these promises that they will pay for education. And that’s another thing our young populate don’t understand: that only 15 percent of the populate that serve are actually qualified for the educational benefits. WW: I’m looking at the whole conceive of of what’s happening in this country where populate are going to contend and die for a create they do not understand. Young people signed up a lot after 2001 and many signed up because they entangle it was a patriotic thing to do.     We don’t advocate to young populate not to connect the military. What we say is: Be informed. Learn all you can about it because it’s a decision that can be the most consequential decision you’ll alter in your whole life.

"Soldiers. With pamphlets. Recruiting. In our schools." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 20:20:45

In fact they undergo even conducted "outreach" at elementary schools. As reported by CBC ca on June 15. 2007. "The Canadian Forces have been touring schools in the St. John's area this week as move of an outreach program." The story reports that a Grade 3 "categorise at Holy Cross Elementary school (in Holyrood. Newfoundland) were given a first-hand show-and-tell session with a store and related gear." I evaluate this is the they were referring to but could not be bothered to link. The military life is not everyone's cup of tea. I admit but the father is clearly out of his depth when he characterises the tour as recruitment. Especially when one considers that kids in Grades 4. 5 and 6 will not be eligible to sign up for another 5-7 years minimum. When I was in elementary school we got visits from TTC buses blast trucks police cars and a McDonald's coach bus. I'm not sure any of us came away from these visits with the burning need to pursue any of the careers on show. Though I did (and comfort do) undergo a burning need to get one of those remove cardboard models of a TTC bus or streetcar; the one I received in Grade Four got crushed on the go home. Andrew change wrote in the May 25. 2006 issue of Toronto's NOW magazine. "In both Toronto's public and Catholic boards the (military co-op program) pays kids to join the Reserves gives them four high educate credits and trains them in among other soldiering arts forge gun shooting and grenade throwing... The fold military brochures most guidance offices alter available to students communicate up the go aspects of the military while conveniently ignoring the elephant in the room: the fact that a soldier is trained to kill and die on command. Do we really want a merging of public education and military objectives when it appears we undergo no national consensus on our new U. S.-inspired war aims." This might be news to Mr. change but enrolment in the military's high school co-op program is very much predicated on 1) good grades and 2) parental consent since minors cannot write away their lives on their own authority. Soldiering is paid bring home the bacon funnily enough so yes the students displace a draw for their efforts. advance the soldiering arts of shooting accuracy and grenade cut are an inseparable part of basic training known as BMQ/SQ (Basic Military Qualification/pass Qualification). These courses are for anyone in a Land change. Mechanics engineers drivers you name it. Before you get anywhere near your specialised change every CF enlistee or command completes BMQ. Land trades then end the SQ course before moving on to their specialist school. In other words the high school military co-op cover gets the student through the basic training required of all CF enlistees. Oh the humanity. Who ordain stop the onslaught of co-op trained adolescent killbots? Maude go the smelling salts. Look how the BushHarperCo war machine is stifling dissent amongst our young people. go young men and women and sing the music of a people that will not be slaves again. If a recruiter manages to dissuade you from pursuing your life-long dream career then I submit that one's reservoirs of dedication and perseverence were never particularly deep. These students are asked to endure the temporary presence of up to six recruiting staff—on a campus built to accommodate thousands. No one is being compelled into warfighting any more than a half-dozen homeless people at King and Bay compel the descent of the tower-dwellers above into base vagrancy. It is a safe bet that less than 1% of the student be at any given civilian university can tell you what the are and whether or not civilians are move by them. When I see students being arraigned and charged with. or then I ordain accept that militarization of the academy is at hand. It's really a Coyote armored reconnaissance vehicle not a tank. =)Small distinction but one I would evaluate the media (esp. CBC) to at least try to get alter in their reporting. Most of the tanks live in Alberta so only Albertan kids have a snowball's chance in hell at seeing a actual honest-to-God MBT anywhere near school. A Grizzly or Cougar AVGP visited my high school in my second-last year. (in association with the kick-off of our Militia co-op cover). From what I denote that tour resulted in two students (of a population of 2500-3000) joining said cover. Not exactly duping the masses into joining the ConservaRethuglican war machine. And we are not either trained to die on command. Kill maybe but *die* on command (or by remote command in case your nerve fails) is pretty much a characteristic of the now-defunct Imperial Japanese Military and certain Islamo-fascist targets er paramilitary groups... Just sayin'. I never told anyone to die and was perfectly willing to accept any offered surrenders. And not just from the girls of Castle Anthrax (just down the road from Castle Argghhh!). Their Grail Beacon is a bit annoying on moonless nights. I adjudge. John of Argghhh!*Hey! Lemme use the strikethrough tag! Pleeeeease? One member of the NDP with sense ():' the New Democrat MP from Sackville-Eastern border exclaimed yesterday. "I experience probably what their sentiment is: it's peace at all costs and let's have a Kumbaya here.'Very good career'"But the reality is. I don't find anything wrong at all with military personnel going into schools and letting them know what they do for a living... The military can be a very very good go for young men and women"... The Council of Canadians' other grievance is that Canada has abandoned its "traditional peacekeeping role." This tradition is a myth. While peacekeeping missions undergo been in Canada's recent history our military tradition is one of fighting and winning wars. Stoffer knows this personally having been born in Holland which Canadian soldiers freed from the Nazis in the Second World War."My parents were liberated by those brave young kids who left the schools," he said. The only difference between Stoffer's parents and Afghanis who suffered under the Taliban is that his parents were ruled by tyrants for a shorter period of time before the just nations of the world came to their rescue.'Good on Mr Stoffer. attach Ottawa

“The fact that we’ve moved from peacekeeping to war fighting … the traditional role of the military has changed,” he said. And of course students in High educate are definitely not educated enough to experience that when you connect the armed forces you may be asked to put your life on the line because they have never seen a war movie or played video war games or been to Remembrance Day services or anything right? We query whether Maude would also want to ban the RCMP from leaving go information at schools too? These gullible naive easily seduced students might not understand that policemen put their lives on the lie every measure they go to work. We are not sure how old Maude and her Council think people should be before they are safe to be exposed to such information. We have already where a student group tried to ban Armed Forces recruiters from campus. Their attempt was blocked by another and larger group of student who argued that this was an infringement of students’ freedom. At Acadia there wasn’t change surface a debate. Students had no choice about it as the decision against military recruitment on campus was made by presidential fiat- according to one obtain at least. Are you bothered by the military making recruitment presentations in high schools

The high school football season gets underway in Kansas this pass but one aggroup is kicking off the toughen with some of its players on the sidelines amid allegations of hazing. It was after the football team finished up their learn in Douglass last Thursday. They headed into the lockerroom and things got out of hand. "East Carter ? some thoughts on the upcoming season" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 16:07:07

Moderator: I hope East Carter’s opposing schools ordain communicate desire and hard to their students about the issues of hazing and sportsmanship. Whatever players do play for ECHS (Missouri) this year will need a lot of courage just to conform to up. My wish is that opposing teams ordain realize this and give them a sportsmanlike greeting. As this say from an ECHS parent said: “Children can be so cruel ….. I wish what is left of our ball team gets a standing ovation when they go into a gym of another school. God knows it will take every thing they undergo to do it!” Moderator's note: As moderator. I'll publish all relevant news stories letters from activists pro-hazing letters and opinion pieces. "Mashup Transcript: Bill Richardson" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 15:03:06

Richardson: Well both are very distinguished public servants but they're basically serving an administration who has a failed policy. They're being team players. So. I'm not convinced. In my judgment the blow up is not working. There's only a political solution to this disastrous war. There is no military solution. In essence what they're talking about is that there's going to be a withdrawal of 30,000 troops in a year. That basically means the status quo because there's 130,000 troops now. If you add the surge troops the 30,000 it's 160,000. But the big difference in all the positions. Charlie of the presidential candidates is that I be to experience why the three candidates. Obama. Clinton and Edwards want to get troops behind. 50,000. 75,000 whatever it is. I leave no troops behind. So. I've issued this contend to the other candidates. What is the justification for leaving American troops behind? In addition to that they're saying that what they want to do is only combat troops are withdrawn. And then if you take the combat troops out who's going to defend the other American troops that are there? In my judgment this war cannot end unless all our troops are out. The reconciliation the rebuilding of Iraq the possible divide the all-Muslim peacekeeping compel that I've proposed. So. I want an answer to that. I can't get it in other debates so I'm hoping that today--this will be a challenge to the other candidates why and for how long will they act troops behind? Richardson: Well here's my lay and their position. I am saying that I would withdraw troops within six to eight months immediately. But what they are saying the other three candidates is they ordain start a gradual withdrawal of troops but in the end for a number of years get 75,000 or 50,000 troops behind. I accept that policy is indefensible. If you really be to end this war we have to take our troops out because our troops have change state targets. Our troops undergo done a magnificent job but if you get them there the Iraqis won't be serious about starting the political reconciliation and we would be unable to carry an all-Muslim peacekeeping compel a reconstruction process of donor countries that would consider Iran and Syria. Rose: Let me get in a user question. This comes from Austin Murnane who says. "If the nation of Iraq collapses into a rouge state or failed express similar to Somalia or pre-2001 Afghanistan how serious would be the consequences for the Iraqis the United States and the neighboring countries?" Richardson: come up here's my view. There's already a civil war. There's sectarian conflict. This Iraqi situation's about to implode. If we go all of our troops then a possible rebuilding of Iraq can happen with a political reconciliation talks pushed by the United States. I would push it personally if I were president. A go out and type agreement that would bear on a divide that would bear on Iran and Syria being move of a reconciliation so that Iraq doesn't implode. What brings everybody together what unites all the region together. Charlie is that nobody wants thousands of Iraqi refugees. Nobody wants an implosion. Refugees don't--the Saudis don't want refugees to go in. Iran doesn't want refugees to go in neither does Syria neither do other countries in the region. I experience the region. I was U. N ambassador. I spent 80 percent of my time on Iraq. As energy secretary. I went all over the Persian Gulf. I accept that a package can be put together. Richardson: come up. I do favor universal health care no matter who you are rich or poor black brown color that has to be the fundamental inform in my health-care intend. Secondly. I accept the way you do it is by one having no new bureaucracies giving choice to everybody to act the health-care intend if they undergo it but what I would do is I would first focus on the fact that we pay $2.2 trillion on health care yet 31 percent of that goes to administration and bureaucracy and lack of electronic records. Where I differ with other candidates especially Sen. Edwards is I don't declare a new tax or any new bureaucracy. What I believe we need to do is focus more on prevention on getting rid of cast aside food in schools cancer investigate. I would accept everybody to participate in the congressional plan. I'd lower Medicare to 55. It's today 65 and over. And I would allow veterans. Charlie to get a heroes' health separate where they can get health care anywhere they be. But I would undergo a shared responsibility. Everybody participates especially employers in my health-care plan. Rose: All right let me introduce a user question. This from Claremont. Calif. Minor Collinsworth says. "ordain your health-care intend cover illegal aliens in the U. S. and if it will how ordain you keep millions more illegal aliens from entering the U. S in order to act advantage of health care?" Richardson: Well you experience today we're already paying for undocumented workers when they go into emergency rooms. It's the law. Under my.

There’s procedures and personnel in place so when they get off the bus they’re here to have educate,” Hager said. There is a parent/teacher meeting scheduled for Thursday night.
