AKRON A man who lived frugally while quietly helping others has donated about $650,000 — most of his estate — to the Akron Children’s Hospital burn unit. The gift surprised the hospital but was explained by Walter Ray Rank’s friends who said he had been moved years ago by the plight of a co-worker whose child was treated for burns. Rank a retired steelworker from Warren called in his will for the hospital to receive the money “for the care and treatment of burn victims.”When Rank died in August 2006 at age 90 his attorney notified Children’s that its Clifford R. Boeckman. M. D.. Regional Burn Center probably would receive a gift approaching $100,000. But after his thousands of U. S savings bonds were counted and all his other bequests were settled this year. Rank’s donation to Children’s totaled $656,368.58. Rank never donated to Children’s during his lifetime. The Ranks lived in a well-kept two-bedroom house. His wife. Emma tended to the home while he worked at Thomas Strip Steel Corp in Warren until he retired in 1977. They were unable to have children but always wanted a large family said their neighbor and longtime friend. Debbi Taylor. Instead the Ranks befriended and cared for the neighborhood kids who often parked their bikes in the couple’s yard and spent hours with them. The two drove new Chryslers that they had purchased with cash. Taylor said. Otherwise they were conservative with their money.
